What is The Subconscious Mind?

The subconscious mind is the part of your mind that is actually responsible for your deepest, most cemented internal beliefs. For example, the belief that it is impossible to levitate is planted firmly in your subconscious mind. Sure, we all know levitation is probably impossible, but there are also very destructive RIDICULOUS beliefs that have been planted in there over the years. Beliefs like, "I am not good enough" or "No one loves me."

You end up with these negative subconscious beliefs, because your conscious mind is very critical. When something bad happens, your conscious mind formulates a negative phrase like this and tucks it away deep in your subconscious to help build your map of reality. Your subconscious is very submissive and willing to accept anything your conscious mind allows it to, so it firmly holds onto these beliefs and causes you to behave, on a subconscious level, in ways that will re-affirm the validity of the beliefs planted there.

For example, when you were young you may have had to wear huge coke bottle glasses in elementary school.  If every day kids teased you and called you ugly, your conscious mind would relay that information to the subconscious mind, which would store it away and begin to act as if it was the truth.  Then, when you were in high school, even if you no longer had to wear glasses at all and you were really quite attractive, your subconscious mind would still be causing you to behave as if you were ugly.  You may be quiet and shy around people -- especially members of the opposite sex.  Members of the opposite sex may always be looking you, because they find you attractive, but your subconscious mind firmly believes your ugly so causes you to consciously believe they are looking at you because you're ugly.  This just feeds right back into that subconscious belief that you're ugly and makes it grow even stronger.

What is The Purpose of The Subconscious Mind?

The purpose of the subconscious mind is to store information about beliefs it learns from the conscious mind and the environment to help construct a 'map of reality.' A map of reality is simply a structure of beliefs that shape the way you see the world around you. As Bill Harris of Centerpoint Technology says, "Your map of reality isn't the actual territory." In other words, what we truly believe to be the truth is simply not always the truth. Just because our map says something, doesn't mean that's the way it is. It is simply the map we've drawn out, based on the limited experience we've had.

So the subconscious mind stores all this information about us and our environment and causes us to behave in ways that will protect us, based on these beliefs. I emphasize 'based on these beliefs', because the subconscious mind may actually be hurting us more than protecting us, but based on the beliefs it has been programmed with, it believes it is protecting us.

That is it's main, vital function and that is why we have it. It is supposed to be a defense mechanism for our own well being.

The second vital function is to collect cues from waking life to use to construct our dreams at night. We need to experience certain hopes and fears while we sleep in order to remain mentally balanced and healthy. That is the role dreams serve us with and the subconscious mind is the genius architect behind all of our dreams.

How Can You Re-Program The Subconscious Mind?

When we realize our subconscious minds have negative beliefs that are preventing self growth from occurring, such as ''I will never be good enough'', we need to find a way to reprogram our minds and re-write these old negative subconscious beliefs.

There are two ways to do this:

  1. Hypnosis
  2. Subliminal Messages

This works similar to re-recording over a tape. Your subconscious mind is the tape that is constantly playing the negative affirmations your conscious mind has been feeding it over the years. Using hypnosis or subliminal messages is like, rewinding the tape, pressing the record button and recording a whole new series of affirmations you would like to believe.

The problem with hypnosis is it is so darn expensive. You have to pay at least $50 a session, for a quality hypnotherapist who knows what they are doing. Then you have to continually keep coming back to be re-fed the affirmations on a subconscious level. You can see how this adds up in price very fast, after just a few sessions. Even if you are filthy rich and can afford weekly hypnotherapy sessions, you may be naturally resistant to hypnosis like 35% of the population are. If this is the case, you won't even be able to go into a trance.

With subliminal messages, all you have to do is by a cheap CD that is like $20 most -- and you only have to pay for it once. After you buy the CD you can listen to it as often as you want. It's recommended you listen to it for an hour a day, every day for a few weeks before you start to see results and changes in your thought patterns.
